Real Wedding

Alison + Kurt Wedding | May 5th

How They Met

The Bride // Kurt was a close friend of my brother's from their years together at UT Law School. Over the years, we crossed paths because of mutual friends. We got to know each other better playing pub trivia on rival teams. There is nothing like a little friendly competition to finally bring you together!

The Proposal // We went for a walk in Sidecut Metropark on a very springy March day, where there were hints of both late winter and early spring. After walking for a while, Kurt steered me away from the river and led me to a gazebo on the top of a hill. As I began looking over a nearby pond with my back turned to him, he got down on one knee and proposed! He presented me with a beautiful aquamarine engagement ring, a birthstone we both share. That night we celebrated with my future in-laws at Mancy's Steakhouse followed by a surprise stay at Belamere Suites complete with candles and rose petals.

Their Wedding

The Bride // The choice to have our wedding at The Toledo Club was simple. Kurt’s family has belonged to the social club for decades and he has many fond memories growing up there. We have also gone to The Toledo Club every Christmas Eve for their Parade of Trees and dinner since we started dating in 2014. Being able to have our wedding there makes the building even more special to us. The building is full of so much beautiful woodwork and architectural details, we decided a palette of gold, black, ivory and blush would complement the interior the best.

My bridesmaids carried a sophisticated gathering of pale pink peonies in their bouquets because it was my late Grandmother’s favorite flower and my Grandfather always grew peonies in their backyard. She passed away from lung cancer in 2006 and I wanted to include a memory of her at our wedding. My bridal bouquet was an elegant English gathering of fragrant off white freesia, pale pink peonies, white ranunculus, lily of the valley, pink sweet peas, black centered white anemones, black privet berries and touches of deep green lemon leaves. The bridesmaids chose their favorite “little black dress” to wear for the occasion and the groomsmen wore a classic black slim cut tux with a flat white pocket square from Men's Wearhouse.

I chose to have our quartet, Millenius Strings play “I Will” by The Beatles when I walked down the aisle because the lyrics are literally our love storyline. It is a memory very close to my heart hearing that song while Kurt met me halfway down the aisle. Our wedding photos were taken by two of Toledo’s best wedding photographers, Adore Wedding Photography. Since our wedding was held in The Glass City, we had a bridal party photo shoot in front of the reflective exterior of The Glass Pavilion.

Our reception was held in the beautiful main dining room of The Toledo Club and did not require a lot of extra flourishes, however, we continued the theme of gold, ivory, and blush with touches of black for the centerpieces on our guest’s tables. Other reception decor included a monogrammed martini luge commissioned by Ice Creations of Napoleon, Ohio, a Polaroid guest book so we could have our guests document the night from their point of view, a display of wedding portraits of our parents and members of the Bridal Party, monogrammed sugar cookies, chocolate orange macaroons and a naked cake decorated with raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries made by the owner of DaCapo Coffee Shop, Mark Ellsworth. Our guests danced to one of the best up and coming bands in Toledo: Organized K-OS. They performed their take on many classic R&B songs and everyone’s favorite pop hits. Kurt and I spent the entire evening tearing up the dance floor with our family and close friends. It truly was the perfect beginning to our marriage.
