Kathryn + Matthew Wedding | December 8th
How They Met
The Couple // Katie and Matt first met at their mutual friends' wedding in June 2013, but at that time they were both at completely different points in their lives. Katie was moving to Florida and Matt had just started dating someone else. It wasn't until Katie came home for Christmas in 2015 that they finally crossed paths again and began a long-distance relationship shortly thereafter. For nearly a year they each traveled from Ohio and Florida every month, until Katie decided it was time to move back to the Midwest. They soon began hunting for a house and in May of 2016 found their perfect home in Ottawa Hills.
Being that Matt dislikes his birthday (the day after Christmas), he figured 'what better way to enjoy it a bit and create a great memory (hopefully!) than us that day to pop the question?' Aside from that, he knew that Katie could not turn down any of his requested activities for the day. Under the guise of relieving Henry's (their English bulldog) cabin fever in the middle of a long winter, off to Wildwood Metropark they went with Henry in tow. As they approached Matt's pre-determined spot on an overlook, he asked her to turn around so he could take a picture but used the opportunity to get down on one knee. Later when asked if she was suspicious, Katie indicated that she was when Matt had asked to take a picture, evidently not his style. They shared the perfect moment and soon were off to spread the good news.
The Bride // We both come from large families so we knew it would be a big wedding but still wanted it to feel intimate. We also knew right away we wanted to do a non-traditional ceremony, and after touring the Secor Ballroom decided that would be the perfect venue for our big day. I really wanted everything to feel timeless and romantic, to be able to look back at our pictures in the years to come to know they would always be as beautiful as ever. When we decided on December 2018 for our wedding, I immediately knew I wanted to do rich, romantic colors to pop against the dead of winter; so chose to use deep greens and burgundy with gold and champagne accents. We tried to keep things simple and classic, with a touch elegance-- and all of our vendors did an amazing job of bringing our wedding dreams to life!
