Marie + DJ Wedding | August 6, 2016
Having lived in Columbus for the last 10 years, and with DJ being from Hudson, the majority of our guests (outside of the bride’s family) had never been to Toledo. We felt like it was our job to highlight the best of what the city has to offer.
St. Patrick’s Historic Church
My familyhas been parishioners of the Historic Church of St. Patrick for decades, so our ceremony location was never a question. There was something very calming in knowing that I was going to be walking down the same aisle that both my brother and sister walked down for their weddings. Plus, I dare you to find a more beautiful church in the city.
We knew we wanted to try and keep most of the wedding events centered around the downtown area, but struggled with a reception venue that fit our aesthetics as well as could accommodate 200+ guests. We started our search early and had contacted the Mud Hens to view their venues for a possible rehearsal dinner location, and learned from their coordinator of the Hensville redevelopment before the public announcement was made. We jumped at the chance to be one of the first wedding receptions in the new Fleetwood Building event space, The Armory. While it did make us a little nervous that we had signed a contract for a venue that we couldn’t actually see in person (at the time the inside was being completely demoed), we loved the look that Hensville was looking to achieve with the historic preservation of the building.
The rooftop patio of the Fleetwood building was the perfect venue for the cocktail hour, and gave our guests a surprise viewing of our bridal party whiffle ball game on the Mud Hens field. DJ is a huge baseball fan and we had already planned to give the groomsmen personalized jerseys of their favorite team as their gift, so the added bonus of being able to take wedding pictures on the field was the icing on the cake. We wanted every aspect of the day to reflect our personalities and be fun, and playing whiffle ball on the field with our bridal party was definitely an unforgettable moment.
With the reception venue secured, we immediately landed on the Oliver House as our rehearsal dinner location. We often stop at the Maumee Bay brew pub when we are visiting Toledo, and we loved that by having our rehearsal dinner in the old lobby we could have local beers on draft.
We loved all of the flower arrangements that Kelly from Hafner Florists designed for us. From my beautiful bouquet to our rustic centerpieces, Kelly created pieces that felt natural and relaxed.
We were fortunate to have discovered The Element at our friend’s wedding reception in Cleveland last summer and even more fortunate to discover they travelled all around Ohio for weddings. They kept the dance floor packed all night and we could not have asked for more. The Element even learned the song for our first dance. Being able to have our first dance to a live version of “Blue Sky” by the Allman Brothers Band meant everything to us.
Guest Accommodations (Park Inn)
Arranging for a block of rooms at the Park Inn directly across the street from The Amory made it easy for our guests to stroll home at the end of the night. Working with the event coordinator, Sam Beane, made me incredibly jealous of all of the brides she works with for weddings in their event space. Sam was wonderful in helping with all weekend of details and made some stressful situations easy to handle.
We fell in love with our photographers’ work on their website, and couldn’t have dreamed up a better pair to capture the memories from our wedding day. Having Brooks and Diana with us on our wedding day felt like having old friends around, old friends who take the time to capture all the beautiful moments we might have overlooked. The pictures turned out flawless, and have given us the chance to relive our day over and over again.
